Katy Pfeiffer, lab safety specialist, demonstrates how to use a fire extinguisher.
Environmental Health and Safety
A lab experiment that proceeds safely. A fire alarm that works the moment it's needed. An office setup that prevents repetitive strain. These non-events aren't happenstance (or perhaps, “non-happenstance”); they are the mission of the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) office. Their greatest successes are preventing headline-grabbing incidents.
“It isn’t flashy to highlight the absence of an incident,” says Tony Sangillo, occupational safety manager, “but safe environments are not the natural state of things. They are the result of effort, expertise and everyone valuing the safety of themselves and others.”
Much of their work is preventative, for good reason. By being involved in the pre-construction phases of a facility, their team can “design out” hazards from future construction. By conducting critical laboratory safety inspections, EH&S supports new developments and future discoveries. Their proactive approach has yielded tangible results. For example, the fire safety team’s inspections and enforcement efforts greatly reduced the number of state fire marshal findings from over 400 in fall 2023 to a record low of under 40 in fall 2025.
Whether you're planning an event, managing a lab or starting new research, EH&S is a vital partner. Thank you to these Bold Bulls for their collaborative spirit and dedication to keeping our community, environment and future safe. Learn more.
