Chris P. Tsokos at his desk before a weekly meeting with eo

Chris P. Tsokos

The year was 1972. The infamous Watergate scandal was beginning to dominate the national news. USF’s inaugural class of medical school students had just finished their first year. And a young professor who had recently moved from Virginia was getting used to the small, sandy campus in Tampa he hadn’t known existed until just a few weeks earlier. He had no idea at the time, but Chris Tsokos would one day become the longest-serving employee at USF.

The 88-year-old Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Statistics has been a prolific force, and his career is a masterclass in tenacity. Tsokos immigrated to the U.S. from Greece in 1951, earned his degree with a football scholarship and promptly began his career in nuclear submarine research. His expertise eventually led him to consult for every branch of the U.S. government, including the CIA and FBI.

Tsokos has lectured in nearly 40 countries and authored 26 books, but USF scholars always come first. He has mentored a staggering 80 doctoral students. Even after facing cancer twice, his resolve hasn't wavered; in the last few years alone, he has secured 10 U.S. patents.

After 54 years at USF, Tsokos still challenges his students to ask themselves every night, "What did I learn today that I did not know yesterday?"

“If you can’t answer that question,” he says, “then you wasted a day.” As USF celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, Tsokos’ relentless pursuit of knowledge and unceasing dedication to developing scholars make him a Bold Bull for the ages.

Our resolution: zero tolerance for fraud in 2026

The start of a new year brings optimism and fresh goals, but it also marks one of the riskiest times for fraud. Read this month’s Fraud Flash Report from the Office of Internal Audit and learn how January has become known as the “post-holiday fraud avalanche.”
