Bold Bulls
Joan “Sudsy” Tschiderer
Sudsy attends the USF St. Petersburg Commencement to receive her master's degree in English on the Bayboro Harbor waterfront on April 28, 1984.
As USF celebrates its 70th anniversary, many generations of Bulls connected to USF’s St. Petersburg campus probably share a memory of a friendly, trusted person who has shaped campus culture through decades of dedication.
When Joan “Sudsy” Tschiderer first stumbled upon the young campus during a 1969 shopping trip, she only planned to stay for a semester. Almost 57 years later, those who know her well might say she is unofficially “the longest stampeding Bull in university history.”
Sudsy is an engaged team member who has witnessed the campus transform from World War II military barracks into a lively waterfront community. She was there for "water volleyball" tournament No. 1, helping to expand waterfront and pool activities. Her natural curiosity, compassion and community-oriented attitude have influenced nearly everyone on campus.
Whether she was founding The Crow’s Nest student newspaper as an undergrad or coordinating major lecture series for University Advancement, Sudsy has remained a consistent presence. Today, she continues to audit classes every semester to stay connected with the "creative spirit" of younger students and to better understand each cohort.
Sudsy is a Bold Bull who sees growth, learning and discovery as daily activities, best pursued with others. Reflecting on the advice she has relied on most over the years reminds us that our collective strength comes from within. “Every person is a brick in the foundation of USF,” she says. “You have a role. You have a place. You leave an imprint. Remember that."
Every member of the team is invited to share their USF stories, photos and videos. We hope to feature you in a future issue. Share a memory.
