For nearly three decades, Joan Bailey has helped students understand how to finance their education. As director of the USF Health Financial Aid Office since 2015, she and her team serve nearly 9,000 students. Bailey’s experience dates back to her graduate assistantship in USF’s Office of Financial Aid. By adapting to continually changing financial regulations, Bailey ensures students can focus on graduating rather than worrying about complex financial aid requirements.

Recently, Bailey spearheaded a project to create an innovative series of financial aid videos. By forming and working with an MD student advisory committee, Bailey’s team gained valuable perspective that helped them translate complex financial policies into clear, relatable conversations about scholarships, grants and repayment options. They created a Canvas course that includes opportunities for MD students to receive additional scholarship funding by engaging with the material. The project is a prime example of Bailey's approach to the work: first, service to others.
To date, MD students have received $173,000 in scholarship funding by engaging on Canvas.
